Why you are probably an entrepreneur

Hello Wild Ones🌼🌼,

I hope you are well and doing awesome things. My hope is that you have found a way to self care into your routine. I am currently so at peace and full of hope in the awesome days to come.

Every time I tell someone that I study entrepreneurship, their first reaction is to ask me what business I want to do. The Oxford Definition of Entrepreneurship is “Activity of setting up a business, taking a financial risk in the hope of profit.” This is a great definition but a very limiting one. Entrepreneurship is more than just buying and selling of goods. Entrepreneurship is about transforming the world by solving problems like initiating social change, creating an innovative product, or creating new life-changing solutions.

I like to refer entrepreneurship, the art of recognizing ways to create value and also capture value. Value could mean different things to different people. Some entrepreneurs recognize that there’s no clean water in the city and then go forth to create value by selling water and capture it by making money from the business. Others recognize that the world needs more happiness and vibes and create value by making music and capture by making money from it, e.g., Sauti Sol, Pantoraking, Beyonce, etc. Others let their imagination lead them to invent a device or system that changes the world, and they capture value through money, e.g., Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, etc. Others recognize that the brands struggle with connecting with their customers, and they create value by creating platforms that connect these two entities and capture value by getting paid for space on their platforms, e.g., Azziad, Maxine Wabasha, (basically every Instagram Influencer).

The truth that anyone can be an entrepreneur without necessarily hawking sweets on the streets. It’s just a matter of understanding where value needs to be created and then going forth and creating with a clear understanding of how to capture it. I mainly say this because I know very many people who like to say that entrepreneurship is not their passion with no clear understanding of what entrepreneurship. These are often people in the ‘big courses’ (As seen in the Course Hierarchy in Kenya) ie, the medical students, engineering students, and computer science. Being an entrepreneur in these fields is about recognizing problems in society and creating solutions/value for these challenges. This can be creating a medical app, creating a system that allows you to book appointments with your public hospital doctor while still at home instead of waiting in the hospital for too long, etc.

This essentially means that everyone can be an entrepreneur as long they are willing to solve a problem that their community is facing and convert it into a value-making machine. The opportunity to create change is one of the reasons I chose entrepreneurship, I hope you choose it for the same reason.
