What is Mental Health

What is Mental Health?

I didn’t consciously think about the word ‘mental health’ until I found myself wishing something bad to happen so that I could justify my sadness. The kind of sadness that creeps up on me when I least expect it. Have you ever felt like your brain has the darkest that you have ever seen? Is there constant rain and storms in your brain? Does every smile take a lot of effort? I had to be too sad for six months to wonder what is mental health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO)Trusted Source:

β€œMental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

WHO goes further to emphasize that mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders. Mental health is fundamental to our collective and individual ability as humans to think, emote, interact with each other, earn a living, and enjoy life. This means that the promotion, protection, and restoration of mental health creates wellness for the individual, community, and world.

What is a Mental Health Determinant?

Mental health is determined by a range of socioeconomic, biological, and environmental factors. Poor Mental Health is often associated with violence, discrimination, poor health, etc. In addition, genetics can make some people more vulnerable to poor mental health. For example, if your father has a mental health disorder then you are vulnerable to it. However, this doesn’t really guarantee that you will get a mental health disorder. Also, some personality factors will make you vulnerable to poor mental health.

The determinants for my mental health were a mixture of socioeconomic, biological, and environmental factors. First, the school I went to created a high-performance environment. Second, I had just moved to a new country with limited funds. Third, I am a very sensitive person. All these factors would lead me to have poor mental health.

There are so many things that could be affecting your mental health. It can be hard to identify some things as issues but it is important, to be honest with yourself. You are the only one who can fix your mental health. It is your responsibility and no one else.
